CORPUS CHRISTI -

Just like you like it, for 67 years.

In Corpus Christi, they say you can find a Whataburger on every corner, and that statement may not be too far from the truth! After all, it was born here.

Tuesday, the chain celebrates another year of pleasing loyal customers.

The first Whataburger opened its doors on Ayers Street in Corpus Christi on August 8, 1950. It was the golden age of drive-ins and American automobiles and the tiny building was the start of what would become a huge following. The first Whataburgers sold for just $.35.

Founder Harmon Dobson came up with the idea to make a burger so big, the customer would have to use two hands to hold it and "so good that after a single bite customers couldn't help but exclaim, 'What a burger!' "

With the instant success of the burger, the business began expanding to other markets. Today, over 790 Whataburgers are now operating in every state from Florida to Arizona.

In 2001, the 77th Texas Legislature officially recognized what Texans had known for more than 50 years: Whataburger is a designated a ‘Texas Treasure.'

The locally grown burger chain now offers an extended menu of specialty items and continues to satisfy returning customers and captivate new ones.

The chain is still family owned and operated and is dedicated to "serving it hot and fresh, 24/7. Treating our customers right. Being proud of everything we do. And never forgetting where we started."
