Last week, a man happened to be in the right place at the right time.
He witnessed an accident and said that's when his instincts kicked in.
"I just wanted to make sure I could all that I could just to make sure they were okay," Jesus Cruz said.
On Wednesday, Cruz found himself in the middle of the scene of a violent and deadly crash.
"Whenever I got about halfway there to the SUV, I saw the little boy in there, and I yelled out, 'There's a kid in there,'" Cruz said.
Cruz also saw the young boy's father and knew immediately that he didn't survive the crash.
He took matters into his own hands to pull the child to safety.
"I just got him out of the car, and I took him to the side of the gas station to make sure he was alright," Cruz said.
Four-year-old Joe was taken to the hospital to be checked out.
Joe's mother now calls Cruz her son's guardian angel.
"I can't even explain how thankful I am for him doing that for me. You know, without him who knows if my son would have been here or not," Nicole Hernandez said.
Cruz reached out to Joe's mother on Facebook with concerns about Joe's health, and then visited him in the hospital.
"It's something I'll remember forever. I was able to see him, and he told me he'd see me soon, and I told him I'd see him soon," Cruz said.
The two plan to stay in touch.
Cruz is now responding to social media posts calling him a hero.
"I wouldn't consider myself a hero. I just was at the right place at the right time in the wrong situation," Cruz said.
