A Corpus Christi family wants justice after their 69-year old mother was brutally beaten in what appears to be a random attack Monday afternoon.

Velia Hernandez, 69, was walking along a sidewalk at the Portairs Shopping Center when a woman grabbed her from behind. Surveillance video shows what appears to be a young lady wearing a white shirt and blue jeans walk up behind Hernandez. The suspect grabs Hernandez by the hair, pushes her down to the ground, and repeatedly punches and kicks Hernandez. The attack lasts several seconds before the suspect walks off, leaving Hernandez bruised and bloodied on the ground.

Witnesses rushed to help Hernandez. She suffered severe cuts to her face that needed stitches. Hernandez received treatment at Christus Spohn Memorial.

Hernandez spoke with KRIS 6 News Tuesday afternoon. Her face is swollen and bruised, her right eye is blackened, and stitches cover her forehead.

She says the attack was unprovoked and completely unexpected.

"I just felt a hand grab my hair and just toss me down," said Hernandez. "And all I felt was just pounding, pounding, and pounding on my face."

Hernandez says she has no idea who the woman is; she's never met her and never spoken to her. However, Hernandez believes she's seen the woman before on an RTA bus.

Whoever she is, the Hernandez family wants justice.

"I want to know who did this to my mother," said Isabel Mendoza, the victim's daughter. "Anyone out there seen anything, let us know."

The family wants the suspect arrested and prosecuted before someone else is hurt.

"I'm just glad that my mother did not die."

The Hernandez family is asking anyone with information on the attack to call the police.
