Certain emergency prep items tax free this weekend

This weekend is Emergency Preparation Supplies Sales Tax Holiday. That means certain items will be tax free.

There is no limit to how many qualifying items you can purchase. And you don't need an exemption certificate to save the money.

Here are the items that qualify for tax exemption:

Less than $3000

  • Portable generators

Less than $300

  • Emergency ladders
  • Hurricane shutters

Less than $75

  • Axes
  • Batteries: single or multipack (AAA cell, AA cell, C cell, D cell, 6 volt, or 9 volt)
  • Non-electric can openers
  • Carbon monoxide detectors
  • Non-electric coolers and ice chests for food storage
  • Fire extinguishers
  • First aid kits
  • Fuel containers
  • Ground anchor systems and tie-down kits
  • Hatchets
  • Reusable and artificial ice products
  • Portable self-powered (including battery operated) light sources; examples include candles, flashlights, and lanterns
  • Cell phone batteries and chargers
  • Portable self-powered (including battery operated) two-way and weather band radios
  • Smoke detectors
  • Tarps and other plastic sheeting

These items do not qualify for tax exemption:

  • Batteries for automobiles, boats, and other motorized vehicles
  • Camping supplies including camping stoves
  • Chainsaws
  • Plywood
  • Extension ladders
  • Stepladders
  • Tents
  • Repair or replacement parts for emergency preparation supplies
  • Services performed on, or related to, emergency preparation supplies
