CORPUS CHRISTI -

The City Council in the process of putting a "school zone" in place near Tuloso Midway High School.

Tuloso Midway High School is located at the intersection of Haven Drive and McKinzie Road.

Officials from the school approached the City regarding establishing a school zone along McKinzie Road. However, McKinzie is a state-maintained roadway, and the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) is responsible for establishing a speed zone on their system.

The City assisted the local TxDOT District Office by providing information to conduct an engineering and traffic study. Results of the study and recommendation to reduce the speed, from 45mph  to 30mph, during designated school zone hours.

Students and parents who drive the road daily agree the change needs to be made.

"It'll be better," said Irene Hernandez as she was dropping a student off at school.

"45 to 30, I think it's pretty safe. I think it should be that way, especially near a school," said TMHS Junior Izzy Sosa.

It will need to pass a second vote to be implemented.
