CORPUS CHRISTI -
The IceRays find themselves just one win shy of winning a first round playoff series for the first time in their junior hockey league history. They lead Shreveport two games to none and can wrap up the series with a win Wednesday night at the American Bank Center.
Former IceRays legend Kurt Wickenheiser traveled from Canada to watch practice. He played from 1999-2002 when they were a pro team and he is the all time leading scorer. He will be honored before the game Wednesday.
"It's all about the kids getting better and going on to get a good education," said Wickenheiser. "These young kids need to start out somewhere and it's a great place to start out here in Corpus Christi."
I asked him about about fighting on the rink because it seems the junior players don't seen to want to fight. "Well, I wasn't a fighter back then, i was a scorer," said Wickenheiser. "But you know hockey has changed. It's a fast game and it's become a very skilled game."
What is your favorite memory from playing with the IceRays? "Probably the year i got 63 goals and led the league in scoring. There's lot's of great memories and can't really say just one but being around the boys and hanging out and having a lot of fun."
