Home construction labor shortage

Posted: Updated:

South Texas has a serious labor shortage in home construction which will slow the pace of new home building for at least the next few years.

This shortage of labor includes framers, carpenters, plumbers, and electricians.

This construction labor shortage is not only happening here in South Texas, it is happening across the country.

That is where the challenge comes into play: There are not enough construction workers to get the job done, especially when you are trying to build a thousand homes a year.

“The shortage is something that builders across the country are feeling. The tile guys, framers, sheetrock guys, builders are looking for hard workers. They need workers to keep up with the demand we have in Corpus Christi,” said President of the Coastal Bend Home Builders Association Trey Summers.

A labor shortage means new builds, like residential homes, are taking longer to complete –a couple months or more. And it is costing the buyer.

“The prices of homes are going up. The time is taking longer, and the main reason for that is the lack of skilled trades. Builders are competing for the same guys which drives the cost up. The codes and ordinances that the state and local government implement drives the cost of homes up. We are looking at a 25 percent increase in just codes and ordinances in the house alone,” said Summers.

Despite the labor shortage, Summers does feel there is a way to get the industry back on track.

“Now we are facing the times where it is all the older generation that is working, and the younger generation is not around as much. One of the big reasons for that is not having the shop classes in schools, and not getting them excited about the construction industry. Something the Builders Association would like to do is help facilitate that and get the programs back in the schools to get the kids excited, and they can have a fun and exciting career in the construction industry,” said Summers.

If you have a really good work ethic and are interested in one of these jobs, there is one waiting for you, without a doubt.
