Exxon Mobil and Saudi Basix Industries want to build a petrochemical plant that would the largest petrochemical project in Texas.
Many residents oppose, but others like Jessica Ortiz, believe the project would benefit Gregory and the surrounding areas.
"Gregory is a small town, in South Texas. We have not grown. We have watched Portland grow and Ingleside grow and I feel like this project coming to Gregory is an opportunity for us to grow," Ortiz said, "I want these people to have an opportunity that we wouldn't otherwise have."
If built, the plant will bring 11,000 jobs during construction and 600 permanent jobs.
According to Ortiz, it wouldn't be as big of a problem if it weren't two miles from a high school. "They chose that location for a reason and I guess that is one thing I wish people would understand."
The proposal is not a done deal. The Gregory-Portland School board will discuss financial incentives for the potential project on Wednesday.
