Various law enforcement agencies collaborated in a raid type operation in Refugio Tuesday morning.
Several local restaurants in Refugio were raided this morning by various law enforcement agencies arriving on scene at around 6:30 a.m.
Reports from the scene indicate that the raid was conducted by officials from the Department of Homeland Security, Immigration and Customs Enforcement and local police.
According to law enforcement, the operation has been in the works for around four years leading up to the raid Tuesday morning. Additional reports indicate that the raid was not part of immigration enforcement, but rather involved a criminal investigation.
At least 16 individuals were in custody, and two local restaurants were involved in the raid, including Gumbo Seafood Restaurant and Taqueria Guadalajara as well as two houses nearby.
The cause of the operation and further details were not immediately made available.
UPDATE: We have added that the raid was reported to be the result of a criminal investigation. We did not report any information relating to the raid being due to immigration enforcement.
The 16 people were initially detained as part of the criminal investigation. They were all employees of the restaurants but Homeland Security suspects that all 16 are undocumented.
One person owns all of the properties raided he was not at any of the locations at the time of the raid. He was also detained and was not one of the 16.
