Jane Caffrey joined KRIS 6 News in Corpus Christi, Texas in June of 2015. She reports live in the field during the weekly evening newscasts, and is behind the anchor desk for the Saturday broadcasts.
Jane has covered a wide array of stories throughout the Coastal Bend and Texas. She reported on Hurricane Harvey's devastating impact on homes, schools, and businesses in the beach side communities of Rockport and Port Aransas. She also joined the U.S. Coast Guard as they cleared vessels stuck in the ship channel that kept the Port of Corpus Christi closed for a record six days. Jane additionally flew with U.S. Customs and Border Protection to Puerto Rico, covering their delivery of much needed supplies to victims of Hurricane Maria. She interviewed a Puerto Rican Customs pilot about his efforts to aid people on the Island and seeing his family in Texas for the first time weeks after the storm.
In the aftermath of the most deadly mass shooting in Texas history, Jane traveled to Sutherland Springs, where she interviewed friends of the victims in the tragedy, community members, and the pastor of a church affiliated with the church where the shooting occurred. She did multiple live shots from the active crime scene. Jane also interviewed an inmate convicted of murder on death row in Huntsville, broke news about the Texas A&M System quietly considering a controversial merger between the Corpus Christi and Kingsville campuses, and traveled to the U.S. Mexico border to report on immigration policy and President Trump's proposed border wall. She has unveiled cases of sex trafficking and military sexual assault in Corpus Christi, delved into the economic impact and environmental concerns surrounding major industries, like voestalpine and ExxonMobil, and filed reports on new Texas legislation from the Austin State Capitol.
Before joining KRIS Communications, Jane worked as a producer at CNN in New York and Los Angeles. She covered general news, contributed to long-form special investigations and documentaries, and reported on red carpet premieres and entertainment events in Hollywood, including the Oscars.
Jane obtained a master's degree in news and documentary from New York University. During the program, she traveled to Rio De Janeiro, Brazil to independently produce a documentary on the forced eviction of favela residents due to urban development prior to the 2016 Olympics.
Her career in journalism began with freelance assignments for NBC Universal and ESPN, as well as internships at KSTP in Minneapolis and TV-Globo in Brazil. Jane covered President Obama's inauguration in Washington D.C. and the 2008 Republican National Convention in St. Paul. She also did production work during the Pan American Games in Rio de Janeiro, covered NFL football games, and produced an interview with Jose Socrates, the former Prime Minister of Portugal, in Lisbon.
With an undergraduate degree from Carleton College in Latin American Studies, Jane strives to combine Spanish with storytelling in Texas. She has lived abroad in Madrid, Spain, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, and Puebla, Mexico.
In her spare time, you can find Jane going to the beach, playing tennis, trying new restaurants, and spending time with animals. A Minnesota native, she loves to explore all the diverse cities and landscapes that Texas has to offer.
