CORPUS CHRISTI -

GROW Local South Texas received a big boost Wednesday evening.

The Coastal Bend Diabetes Initiative handed over a check for $57,336.

Since 2007, the CBDI has awarded $800,000 of grant money to different non-profits. Each group shares a common thread -- they're working hard to build a healthier, stronger community.

GROW Local STX promotes healthy eating and healthy community by offering fresh, homegrown products in a weekly farmers' market.

The executive director says this grant money will allow them to buy much needed equipment and hire a couple helpers.

"All of the funding and all of the employees can help us to continue those programs that we've had a hard time keeping up with because we didn't have people necessarily, regularly committed to, as a job, making those things happen," said Aislynn Campbell, Executive Director of GROW Local STX.

The farmers' market is held every Wednesday at La Retama Park at 500 Mesquite street from 5-7pm.
