CORPUS CHRISTI -

20 years after her death, there are plans for a major festival to honor Selena.

The "Fiesta De La Flor" is a 2-day event expected to happen in April.

Tuesday, the city council is expected to approve an agreement with the Convention and Visitors Bureau.

CVB officials estimate it will attract 50,000 people from around the Coastal Bend and Beyond, and be a million dollar economic boost to the area.

News of the event was welcomed by her fans.

"She's basically the reason I started singing," says Lorissa Chapa, who recalled where she was when Selena died.

"I actually got the news while I was in elementary school that she died, and my mom had to take me home because I couldn't stop crying," she said.

"Selena opened the doors for a lot of these children," says Sylvia Dancer, "Right now, none of them even knew Selena."

"Sylvia D", a local DJ and talent scout has hosted a remembrance in Selena's neighborhood since 1996, but she's happy to share the stage with the Convention and Visitors Bureau.

The CVB plans to hold the Fiesta De La Flor in the new bayfront park area near the American Bank Center.

"I think it's a wonderful, wonderful idea. Why 20 years later? Who knows. But better late than never," says Dancer.

Two key questions remain about the event.

Officials haven't specified whether this be a recurring event or a one-time anniversary special.

It's also unclear who will be the headline performers at the event.

The CVB and the Quintanilla family are expected to provide some of those answers on Wednesday.
