NEW YORK (AP) - Houston Astros dynamo Jose Altuve has won the American League MVP award, towering over New York Yankees slugger Aaron Judge by a wide margin. The 5-foot-6 Altuve drew 27 of the 30 first-place votes in balloting by members of the Baseball Writers' Association of America. Miami Marlins slugger Giancarlo Stanton won the National League MVP award, barely edging Joey Votto of the Cincinnati Reds. Marlins new team executive Derek Jeter says the club is listening to trade offers on Stanton.
PHOENIX (AP) - James Harden had 23 of his 48 points in the second quarter while the Houston Rockets scored 90 points in the first half en route to a 142-116 win over the Phoenix Suns. Houston dominated with Chris Paul back in the lineup after he missed 14 games because of a knee injury. The Rockets made 61 percent of their first-half shots to match the second-most points in a first half in NBA history.
ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) - Carson Wentz and the Philadelphia Eagles started fast just as they did a year ago and have sustained it this time. Dak Prescott hasn't quite found the formula that carried the Dallas Cowboys to the best record in the NFC when he and Wentz were fellow rookie quarterbacks in 2016. Now Wentz has a chance to push his team to the brink of the NFC East title on Sunday night against the defending division champions.
HOUSTON (AP) - Tom Savage is tired of talking about how he's playing and what he needs to do to improve. The Houston Texans look to end a three-game skid when they host the Arizona Cardinals on Sunday and the quarterback is only worried about one thing. "It really doesn't matter what I say right now or how I view this upcoming week," he said. "The only thing that really matters is just winning, and that's it."
PHOENIX (AP) - Houston Rockets guard Chris Paul is set for his return from a left knee injury against the Phoenix Suns. Paul has missed 14 of Houston's 15 games, with the Rockets winning 10 without him.
NACOGDOCHES, Texas (AP) - Kevon Harris scored a career-high 26 points and Stephen F. Austin rolled past LeTourneau 91-68. Harris, a sophomore, made 4 of 8 3-point attempts and the Lumberjacks shot 58 percent in the win while outrebounding the Division III YellowJackets 41-21.
BEAUMONT, Texas (AP) - T.J. Atwood had career highs of 21 points, 10 rebounds and seven assists and Colton Weisbrod had a double-double to lead Lamar to a 103-66 win over NAIA Jarvis Christian. Weisbrod finished with 18 points and 11 rebounds, Josh Nzeakor added 14 points and Nick Garth scored 13 _ including four 3-pointers _ with seven assists for Lamar.
(AP) - New Rockets owner Tilman Fertitta is interested in bringing an NHL team to Houston, a possibility that didn't exist under the NBA team's previous regime. Fertitta released a statement Thursday confirming interest in a hockey team in Houston.
