SEATTLE (AP) - Shin-Soo Choo's sacrifice fly broke a tie in the eighth inning, Elvis Andrus followed with an RBI single and the Texas Rangers beat the Seattle Mariners 3-1 to boost their slim playoff chances. The Rangers won their second straight after a five-game losing streak and pulled within 3½ games of Minnesota for the second American League wild card.

HOUSTON (AP) - Jose Altuve homered, Alex Bregman hit an RBI double and the AL West champion Houston Astros extended their winning streak to five games with a 3-1 victory over the Chicago White Sox. Collin McHugh allowed one run and five hits with five strikeouts in five innings for Houston.

STILLWATER, Okla. (AP) - By now, most college football fans probably know how good James Washington is, but as No. 6 Oklahoma State demonstrated last week, he has a lot of talented company among the Cowboys' group of wide receivers. A total of four wideouts, including Washington, recorded at least 100 yards receiving in OSU's dominant 59-21 victory over Pittsburgh, as Heisman Trophy candidate quarterback Mason Rudolph threw for 497 yards and five touchdowns, all in the first half.

COLLEGE STATION, Texas (AP) - Texas A&M freshman quarterback Kellen Mond has improved in each of his three games this season. The question for the Aggies is has he improved enough to help A&M be successful when Southeastern Conference play begins Saturday against Arkansas.

WACO, Texas (AP) - Baylor will get a boost for its Big 12 opener against third-ranked Oklahoma with the season debuts of 1,000-yard rusher Terence Williams and two starting defenders. Williams will be back in the lineup Saturday after missing the first three games while recovering from offseason shoulder surgery. Coach Matt Rhule also says senior safety Taion Sells has completed his three-game suspension and that cornerback Grayland Arnold returns after breaking his left arm during a preseason scrimmage

NEW YORK (AP) - Dallas Wings guard Allisha Gray is the WNBA Rookie of the Year. The league says Gray received 30 votes from a national media panel while Atlanta Dream guard Brittney Sykes got 10. Gray averaged 13 points and 3.9 rebounds and led all rookies with 1.53 steals per game.

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. (AP) - Arkansas quarterback Austin Allen emerged as one of the top quarterbacks in the Southeastern Conference last season, and he entered this year as the league's leading returner in passing efficiency. So far, the senior's encore has yet to live up to the lofty expectations he set a year ago in his first season as the starter for the Razorbacks.
