HOUSTON (AP) - Chris Paul had 27 points and Gerald Green came off the bench to score 21 as the Houston Rockets used a huge second quarter to take the lead and cruise to a 102-82 win over the Minnesota Timberwolves to take a 2-0 lead in the first-round playoff series. Houston fell behind early, but went on top for good with a 37-point second quarter, powered by four 3-pointers from Green, and the Wolves didn't threaten again.

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) - Jake Faria won for the first time since last July 25, allowing one run over six innings to lead the Tampa Bay Rays over the Cole Hamels and the Texas Rangers 4-2. Faria struck out six and walked one. He had been 0-4 in eight starts and two relief appearances since beating Baltimore. Hamels gave up two hits through five scoreless innings before the Rays rallied to take a 3-1 in the sixth on Daniel Robertson's RBI double, C.J Cron's run-scoring single and Adeiny Hechavarria's sacrifice fly.

LUBBOCK, Texas (AP) - Texas Tech standout freshman Zhaire Smith is turning pro. The 6-foot-5 guard says he is signing with an agent before the NBA draft. The decision comes two weeks after he said he'd enter his name in the draft without an agent to see where things stood. Smith averaged 11.3 points and 5.0 rebounds a game for the Red Raiders, who made it to the NCAA Elite Eight for the first time in school history.

SAN ANTONIO (AP) - Sergio Garcia has a long history with Texas even before he became a part-time resident. He made his PGA Tour debut as a pro in 1999 at the Byron Nelson Classic outside Dallas. He has won 3 times in Texas. His wife is from Texas. And the Spaniard consulted on the design of the golf course used for the Valero Texas Open. He's back to compete beginning Thursday against a field that includes Adam Scott, Ernie Els and defending champion Kevin Chappell.

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - Former Tennessee quarterback Quinten Dormady says on Instagram that he's transferring to Houston. Dormady had announced in mid-January that he would earn his degree from Tennessee and then play elsewhere in 2018 as a graduate transfer. Houston hasn't officially announced Dormady's addition. Dormady started Tennessee's first five games last year before getting replaced by Jarrett Guarantano.

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (AP) - There was a mutual attraction between Tina Thompson and Virginia's women's basketball program that made for a short courtship. Thompson gushed about the program's successful history Wednesday when she was introduced as Virginia's new coach. Athletic director Carla Williams says Thompson's decorated history quickly made her an attractive candidate and the 43-year-old is "exactly what we need." They first spoke on Friday, and Thompson was introduced as the choice Monday.
