CORPUS CHRISTI - A man who broke into a home over on Schanen Boulevard today evaded an extensive police search of the neighborhood. The suspect parked a stolen green car in the driveway and broke a window in an attempt to get inside.

A brave 11-year-old girl called 9-1-1 once the man broke a window in the home as she was all alone. But the suspect ran off as soon as she made the call.

"This did surprise me here. Because I was headed on that way and I saw a cop car. And I said what's going on. And then another one zooming down and I said 'uh oh something happening,'" said neighbor Lucy Arrendondo.

As soon as cops arrived they blocked off the area around the home and put all nearby schools on lock down. Police searched the neighborhood with their dogs trying to find the suspect. But after about an hour they slowed down the search saying he most likely got away.

The family says their little girl was shaken up so were some neighbors. "I mean everybody keeps an eye on everybody around here, you know. Usually we keep an eye on each other's houses and if anything's going suspicious we let each other know," said Arrendondo.

But others say attempted burglaries like this are to be expected around the holidays. "In Christmas, of course, you expect this stuff. I mean every Christmas you find this... Maybe not here... But somewhere in our city. It just happened to be in our neighborhood," said neighbor Martin Garza.

"Now we just gotta be more careful, keep our doors and windows locked and make sure not to leave our kids alone. I mean that's all we can do," said Arrendondo.

Police are still on the look out for the suspect but say they don't have much to go on. If you live in that area officers say watch for any suspicious people and to lock your doors.
