CORPUS CHRISTI - A civil rights group is suing Nueces county over the death of an inmate. Gregory Cheek collapsed in his cell back in February 2011 and later died at the hospital.
This week, the Texas Civil Rights Project announced it has filed a federal lawsuit claiming jail employees ignored recommendations from doctors and a judge by keeping Cheek in the jail instead of sending him to a mental facility.
The group claims Cheek suffered from obvious mental illnesses and being in the jail immediately lead to a decline in his physical health.
Named as defendants in the lawsuit are Nueces County, Nueces County Sheriff Jim Kaelin, a healthcare company, two physicians and a physician's assistant.
County officials had no comment on the lawsuit today.
The Texas Rangers handled the investigation into Cheek's death. We do not know the results of that investigation.
Cheek was arrested on November 26, 2010for allegedly vandalizing a home on Peerman Place where the homeowner reported extensive damage, including graffiti and holes in the walls.
Police told us when they arrived that Cheek claimed he owned the home and he was blessing it.
