CORPUS CHRISTI - A construction worker died a short time ago in a trench collapse on the 6900 block of King George Place. Fire officials say a crew was working inside the 8 foot deep trench to uncover a utility line in the subdivision.
The crew was working with an excavator at the site, but at the time of the accident it is believed only men with shovels were in the trench.
The one worker was possibly hit on the head by an object or a large amount of dirt during the collapse. He was unconscious when firefighters arrived. They quickly discovered the man was no longer alive.
Firefighters and police are waiting for the Medical Examiner to take a look at the body before it is removed from the trench. First, they need to secure the sides of the trench so investigators can take a closer look.
Another worker in the trench was taken to the hospital with a leg injury.
Officials are in the process of contacting the Occupational Health and Safety Administration (OSHA) about the incident.
