NORTH BEACH -- The city has finally started work on a 2008 bond project for the North Beach area.
The North Beach entry archway was supposed to be completed in 2011.
That didn't happen.
It won't happen in 2012 either.
But -- fingers crossed -- by 2013, the arch will be in place.
City engineer Dan Biles says work on the arch began last week.
It's the center piece of a face-lift which includes a boardwalk and trail at Dolphin Park
and a bath-house not yet built.
Biles blamed the project delay on mis-calculated bids, construction issues and re-designs.
Over at Fajitaville though, they're just excited the city is focusing on North Beach.
Marketing Coordinator Amy Lee said, "They're really taking care of North Beach and they're really starting to pay attention and care about North Beach."
The Fajitaville owner plans to take part in transforming North Beach too, by adding a ferris wheel outside the restaurant.
They have the ferris wheel permits and the project could get underway in the next year.
Lee said, "We're secretly negotiating right now but I promise we'll make it known to everybody."
Along with the changes, the city is also working on keeping the beach clean.
The mayor and other city leaders say the transformation will pay off.
Mayor Nelda Martinez said, "It's a treasure that we have here."
Once the work is done, North Beach will be more pedestrian friendly and popular with the tourists, which will help increase the hotel-motel tax, bringing in more money and opportunity for the city and it's residents.
As for what's next, the archway should be finished by this coming spring.
A bathroom facility will be up and running near the USS Lexington by next summer.
And, by November of 2013, the city wants to begin work on a plaza, road repairs and landscaping on North Beach.
