Womens Tennis Sweeps Sam Houston State, 5-0, to Extend Winning Streak

CORPUS CHRISTI - The Texas A&M - Corpus Christi women's tennis team swept Sam Houston State (3-8, 1-5 SLC) today, 5-0, at the Thomas J. Henry Tennis Center to win their seventh consecutive match. The Islanders (13-4, 6-1 SLC) dominated in singles play with five singles wins to earn their sixth straight Southland Conference match of the season.

"These girls are fighting extremely hard together as a team," Director of Tennis Steve Moore said. "They have a goal that they are working very hard towards to attempt to win the Southland Conference. I feel like they are playing with great effort and energy to try and reach their goal.

"The leadership from our seniors has been tremendous. I feel like this team is getting better each week. We have a tough journey ahead of us and we must bring it every day. We must max out every day. We're not much of an outcome-oriented team, but rather we believe more of the process of maxing out our effort and attitude each day. I feel the girls did a great job of that today and we have to be ready to do it again tomorrow against a very tough Lamar team."

The Islanders and Bearkats started out with singles play and the Islanders earned an early 1-0 lead after Kerry Galhos earned her 11th singles victory of the season and seventh consecutive win at No. 6 singles after her opponent defaulted. The freshman is now 11-2 in singles play and 7-0 in conference play.

Sandra Burges followed with a straight-set win at No. 5 singles, 6-0, 6-1, over Isabella Costa for the Islanders second point of the day. The senior improved her singles record to 12-4 and 6-1 in Southland play. Maider Martin kept the momentum going with a 6-3, 6-0 win at No. 3 singles over Natalie Petaia. After starting all season at No. 2 singles, the sophomore earned her first win at No. 3 today.

For the third straight Southland match, Judit Vives clinched the match for the Islanders with a straight-set, 6-2, 6-2 win at No. 2 singles over Kayla Stevenson. Vives, who started out at No. 6 singles at the beginning of the season, worked her way up to No. 3, before earning her first win today at No. 2. The freshman has now won seven straight singles matches to improve to a team-best 13-1 overall record.

The Islanders garnered their final point of the day at No. 1 singles after Stefania Nicolae topped Imke Jagau in straight sets. In the first set, Nicolae squeezed out a 7-5 victory, before sweeping through the second set, 6-0. The senior has now won three straight singles match in the No. 1 slot.

In No. 4 singles, Celia Rodriguez was battling Karen Martinez when rain forced the Islanders and Bearkats to call the match. Rodriguez secured the first set 6-4 and was ahead 4-3 in the second set when play was stopped.

The match was sponsored by longtime supporter Scott Humpal and Humpal Physical Therapy.

"I can't thank again our dear friend Scott Humpal and Humpal Physical Therapy for his generosity and support of Islanders Tennis," Moore said.

The Islanders will remain at home to host Lamar on Sunday at 12 p.m. at the Thomas J. Henry Tennis Center. The match is sponsored by Utility Trailer Sales Southeast Texas, Inc.
