CORPUS CHRISTI - The Texas A&M - Corpus Christi women's basketball team extended its win streak to a season-high four games, as the Islanders (14-11, 7-7 Southland) beat Oral Roberts (7-16, 6-7) for the second time this season with a 61-53 victory at the American Bank Center on Saturday.
Freshman Brittany Mbamalu had her fourth game of the season with at least six treys, as she knocked down six for a game-high 18 points.
Jasmine Shaw kept her streak of impressive performances going, as she posted 13 points and pulled down 10 rebounds to go with them to record her third double-double of the season. Camesha Davis also came close to matching this achievement, as she had seven points to go along with eight rebounds.
After shooting just 26.9 percent in the first half, ORU came back to shoot at a 51.7 clip in the second half. However, the Golden Eagles first-half deficit was too big to overcome as the Islanders continued their climb in the Southland standings.
It didn't take long for Shaw and the Islanders to get on the board, as she hit a three just five seconds into the game. The Golden Eagles came charging right back, hitting two threes to go along with a three-point play to go up 9-3 at 16:45.
Mbamalu and Shaw paired up to hit back-to-back threes to tie the game back up before the Islanders scored the next eight points to cap off a 14-0 run.
ORU cut the lead in half with a pair of jumpers before Mbamalu hit her second three of the game to push it to a 20-13 ballgame with 9:21 left to play.
With the lead still at seven for the Islanders, a jumper for the Golden Eagles cut it to 22-17 with 6:26 on the clock. However, this was the last bucket ORU would convert the rest of the half, as the Islanders scored 11 points - six of which came on Mbamalu's third and fourth threes - down the stretch to take a 33-17 lead into the half.
For the second consecutive game, A&M - Corpus Christi held its opponent under 20 points in the first half of play.
The Islanders opened up the second half just like the first, as it was a three that pushed the lead up to 19. Then, after ORU hit one of two from the line, Shaw hit another three, making it 39-18 at 18:07.
The next bucket came from the Golden Eagles, snapping a streak of 8:38 without a field goal, going 0-for-8 during that streak with seven turnovers. The bucket sparked a 14-7 run for ORU to pull it within striking distance at 46-34 with just more than 10 minutes to play.
With the Islanders still up by 12 after some back and forth action with 8:12 to play, a pair of jumpers cut the lead down to single digits for the first time of the game at 6:37. This was in the midst of a stretch where the Islanders failed to score in nearly four minutes.
Mbamalu put an end to the drought in a big way, though, as she stroked her sixth triple of the game - after hitting just four in the last three games combined - to put her team back up by double digits, extending the lead to 55-44 with 4:38 to go.
ORU converted on a old-fashioned three-point play to pull back within eight, but this was the closest the Golden Eagles came, as Shola Adebayo came away with six points in the final four minutes to seal the win for the Islanders.
The Islanders will have a week between games before they travel to Houston to matchup with Houston Baptist on Saturday at 3 p.m. for their final road game of the season.
