HOUSTON - Shola Adebayo scored a career-high 26 points to lead the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi women's basketball team to a 74-62 win over Houston Baptist on Saturday. It marked the fifth straight victory for the Islanders (15-11, 8-7 Southland), who moved into seventh place with the win.
Alissa Campanero posted a career-high 14 points as well for the Islanders, going 6-for-7 from the free-throw line in the process. Brittany Mbamalu added 11 points and matched the school's single-season record for three pointers in a season.
Shanice Steenholdt and Tayler Jefferson led the way for the Huskies (11-15, 7-8) with 13 points apiece, while Rachel Arthur scored 10. The Islanders won the battle of the boards, 39-33, and outshot HBU, .511 (23-for-45) to .375 (24-for-64).
After the Huskies scored the first basket of the game, the Islanders caught fire from the field, as Campanero, Mbamalu and Adebayo each drilled threes in succession as part of a 13-0 run that gave the Islanders a 13-2 edge. But HBU came right back, chipping away with an 11-6 rally to cut the deficit to six after a Jefferson triple at the 12:14 mark.
But the Islanders had another run in them, outscoring the Huskies 10-1 over the next 5:07 to build a 29-14 lead on Ashley Darley's layup. Kassie Jones scored six straight points during the run as well. From there, the two teams went back-and-forth into the locker room, with Adebayo drilling a jumper as the halftime buzzer sounded to send the Islanders to the locker room up 38-25. A&M-Corpus Christi went 6-for-10 from downtown and outrebounded HBU 21-14 in a strong first-half effort.
A&M-Corpus Christi came out of the break with five straight points to stretch the lead to a game-high 18 points. Adebayo capped it with a layup inside to match her previous career high with 15 points. But HBU was able to slowly chip away, using a 16-7 run to cut the lead to single digits for the first time since the 11:41 mark of the first half, 50-41.
Adebayo got the Islanders going once again, as she battled for a tough jumper that sparked an 11-2 run and brought the lead to 18 at 61-43. Mbamalu finished the run with a three-ball from the left wing that was her 75th of the season, matching Nicole Duncan (2006-07) for the single-season record in three pointers.
The Huskies were able to cut into the deficit, getting as close as 11, but the margin was too much to overcome, as the Islanders sealed the game on the defensive end.
The Islanders and HBU will meet once again in a week, as the Huskies travel to the Coastal Bend for the annual Homecoming game on Saturday, March 1. Tipoff is slated for noon at the Dugan Wellness Center.
