Women Fall In Opening Round Of LSC Tournament

ALLEN, Texas - With aspirations of making an impact in the first trip to the Allen Event Center, the sixth-seeded Texas A&M-Kingsville women's basketball team came up just short in a 68-61 loss to third-seeded Texas Woman's on Thursday afternoon in the first round of the Lone Star Conference Women's Championship.

The Javelinas, who finished the season 11-16, were making their first trip to the conference tournament since the 2009-10 campaign. TWU improves to 16-11 on the year and advances to the second round to face Tarleton State at noon on Friday.

Kingsville led early behind sophomore Ruby Robertson, who had seven points in the first 10:10. Robertson's free throws at the 9:50 mark of the second half gave the Hoggies a 13-12 lead.

The Pioneers regained the lead on a pair of Barbara-Scott Kolb free throws eight second later. Kolb then followed with a 3-point basket as TWU went on a 15-1 run to take a 27-14 lead with 4:53 left in the half.

The Javelinas pulled to within six by halftime as they closed the half with an 8-1 run to make it 28-22. Ashley Viera started the run with a trey, while Sheana Jones was 3-of-4 from the line in the spurt.

TWU opened the final half with an 8-1 run to build a 36-23 advantage just over four minutes into the run.
Lauren Jay ended the run with a three to make it a 10-point game 36-26.

Kingsville chipped away at its deficit getting to within five points on one of Viera's four treys. However, they could not get over the hump and puller no closer as TWU pushed its lead back to 12 with three minutes left.
A late charge twice pulled Kingsville to within seven in the final minute.

Robertson led Kingsville with a career-best 18 points off the bench while Viera had 15 points. Rosalie Cutri had five steals and team-best eight rebounds in her final game.

The Javelinas struggled offensively hitting 27.9% from the floor. They had hit over 57% in their final two regular season games to reach the sixth seed with wins over Midwestern State and Angelo State.

Rebekah Cluley led TWU with 17 points. Danielle Westerfield had 13 points and Kolb 12. The Pioneers dominated the glass 55-39 led by Mary Kovtun with 11.
