CORPUS CHRISTI - More than thirty people braved the heat and rolled up their sleeves today to help Habitat For Humanity, an organization that works to provide housing for those who can't afford it.
Maria Martinez said she's always been employed, but she's been jumping from apartment to apartment since a drunk driver rammed into her home back in 2011.
"It's one of the reasons I ended up in this situation," said Martinez. "But, I thank god because out of that tragedy came a blessing."
One of the organization's main focuses is working to provide homes for working people who can't get out of bad housing situations.
"Basically what were doing," said construction supervisor Mark Blankenship. "Is taking hard working responsible people who are in bad living conditions, and giving them a chance to own a brand new home."
Since Martinez qualified for the program, she's been with volunteers every Saturday, helping them build her brand new home completely from scratch.
"It's inspiring, for people to take their own time," said DaVita volunteer manager Tim Greene. "To come out, and help people within the local community."
Martinez said she'll never be able to thank the community enough for helping her get back on her feet.
"I'll always be thankful to my Lord, for this blessing," she said. "It's just a big blessing that, thanks to this Christian organization, I have been able to be accepted."
