PORTLAND, Texas - Orange water is causing concern tonight for people who fish or take the time to enjoy nature near Indian Point Pier. The water at Sunset Lake is about the same color of orange you would find with a nice sunset.
We saw a little bird bathing who didn't seem to mind the color. People are curious about what's going on.
"Yeah, I've been wondering what it is, and the purple too, I've seen it purple," said Brecken Wilson, who spends about 4 days a week there.
Some, like Cliff Thiele have their own suspicions. "So, its got to be either bait fish or big fish in there and the bait fish stirring the water up, you know, they flip their tail and poof," he said.
Wilson took her own guess, "I'm wondering if it's the mud from the bottom getting stirred up that's making it turn orange," she said.
We called Texas Parks and Wildlife for their answer. This afternoon test results confirmed their original suspicions. It's a non-toxic algal bloom.
If you spot an algal bloom in your area, you can call Texas Parks and Wildlife to report it. Their number is 361-825-3246.
