KINGSVILLE, Texas - The Texas A&M-Kingsville football team held its annual Spring Game on Saturday afternoon with Team State Farm coming out with 30-14 win over Team New York Life at Javelina Stadium.
The Javelinas will have another of week spring practice before putting the pads up until camp opens in late summer.
Alex Rios threw for two touchdown passes in the first of two 35-minute halves as the White team jumped out to a 14-8 halftime lead. He completed a 7-yard strike to Patrick LaFleur to open the scoring. The conversion was good for an 8-0 lead.
Quaylon Jones tied the game for the hosts with a 1-yard burst.
Rios struck again when connected on a 9-yard pass with Jeffrey Harrison. The conversion failed as State Farm led 14-8.
The White opened the second half with a pair of rushing scores. Trey Battle had a 1-yard TD run with Rios keeping the ball on a successful conversion run. His score was set up by Shavon Pennie's interception of a Dean Brantley pass and a 13-yard run by Ashton Jefferson. Shiloh Whetsel pushed the White's advantage to 30-8 with a 3-yard run.
The Blue added a late touchdown as Aaron Bueno connected with Shane Prater on a 26-yard strike in the front of the end zone.
Unofficially, Rios finished the game 10-of-12 with 100 yards passing to lead the White. He added 46 yards rushing, while Jefferson added 43 yards on five totes. Layton Dworaczyk had 46 yards receiving on five receptions, while LaFleur had 44 on three catches.
For the Blue team, Bueno was 4-of-8 with 100 yards receiving. Jones had 35 yards on eight carries, while Bueno added 33 yards on six carries. Andres Alaniz led the way with a reception for 40 yards.
The Blue's Kamen Ruelas led all players with seven tackles, while teammates Mike Yarbrough and Kerry Wheatfall, Jr. added five apiece.
