CORPUS CHRISTI - The sounds of West Africa filled Tuloso-Midway Intermediate School. The students took part in the "Day of Drumming" program. The music teacher, Diana Deaton says "Drum Circles" are the up-and-coming thing in elementary music.
Fourth and fifth grade students followed along as David Cox taught them how to tap on the djembe drums.
"I bring a drum for each student and they get to learn about West African Culture, music, drums," Cox said.
Cox is the owner of Rhythm Path, a company that teachers others about the West African culture through "drum circles".
"I've always had a love for learning and I'm very excited to learn about the music of West Africa," one student said.
The high energy lesson is something the students appreciate. Even staff members and others had a chance to bang the drums. It's all thanks to a grant that Deaton received to pay for the program.
"Teaching from other cultures and other countries is part of our TEAKS. So he's going to teach songs and rhythms and culture, things that about West Africa and all of that will be stuff I want to incorporate later," Deaton said.
Cox says the interactive drumming, helps students understand how villages in Africa communicate and why they do it.
"They will communicate when there's a festival, when they're celebrating the harvest, when someone is getting married, they will get out their drums and drum all night long," he added.
The students did celebrate. One of them even got to be the maestro for the crowd.
