Welding Competition at Nueces Co Junior Livestock Show

CORPUS CHRISTI - The Nueces County Junior Livestock Show has gotten underway at the fairgrounds in Robstown.

Welding students from area schools took part today in the livestock show's welding contest.

Because there are so many students competing this year they were divided into groups.

Organizers say they're proud of these students who are going into a trade that will open major doors for them.

"A lot of these kids are from blighted and impoverished areas and it gives them opportunities. I have students that have been through our program who are making more than the superintendents at the school districts now and they've only been in the field 3 and 4 years," says Ellery Francisco, the director of the welding contest.

Meanwhile, the livestock show will continue through next week. A team roping competition will be held at 8 a.m. tomorrow, an alumni barbecue cook-off at 9 a.m., followed by a parade through downtown Robstown at 10:30 p.m.
