CORPUS CHRISTI - You want a rivalry game, well you got one. Flour Bluff at Calallen on Friday Night under the lights, it doesn't get much better than this.
"I think Friday will be a war and Saturday morning will be really slow that's how it will be, we are gonna be physical they will be physical we will just see who is the most physical on Friday night," said Calallen Linebacker Kade Young.
The Wildcats enter undefeated and ranked 4th in Class 4A, while Flour Bluff is also unbeaten but yet unranked. I'll say this much, the Hornets are probably better than half the currently ranked football teams in the state.
"We haven't played a team that gives us a test yet, they will push us to the limit, a four quarter game I hope," said Hornets Safety Jamal Pradia.
Former district rivals, this meeting is a non-district affair thanks to realignment, but don't think it's meaningless.
"We have been working hard and focused on our plays and what we will run against them and we are ready," said Calallen Lineman Dillon Vaughan.
If nothing more, it's a preview of what many believe will be a playoff showdown if the stars properly align.
"You know its fun to play them, they are the biggest challenge of the year. They're a great team great program and they play hard and give us a great game and we just wanna give them a great game too," said Hornets Receiver Will Mendiola.
The Hornets are averaging 22.5 points per game, but are capable of scoring around 50. Their offense is overloaded with talent, but fast starts have been somewhat of an issue so far. They have yet to post a point in any first quarter, but did erupt for 22 last week against Carroll. Kolton Mims is one of the best athletes in the area, plus he has a stable of running backs to choose from.
The Wildcats meanwhile are your typical Phil Danaher team. Physical, athletic, and well coached. Danaher after all, the winningest active coach in Texas. His defense is down right nasty, they've allowed just one touchdown so far this year, while the offense is still a work in progress. After piling on 40 at Mercedes in Week 0, Calallen was held scoreless at home through the first half by Weslaco East. They scored 21 in the second en route to a victory but the sluggish start did turn a few heads. Like the Bluff, Calallen has plenty of talent in the backfield, it's just a matter of getting everyone in sync, if that happens then watch out!
We of course will have complete highlights from this game as well as 12-others on Friday Night.
