LA JOYA- Police say a man suspected of shooting two South Texas police officers is "presumed dead" following an assault by officers on the house in which he was barricaded.
The suspect is identified as 29-year-old Joaquin Cibrian, a Texas Syndicate gang member whose last known address is out of Alice.
He is wanted for the murder of a Mexican citizen last week in the town of Edinberg.
Hidalgo County Sheriff Eddie Guerra says officers tried to serve a warrant on Cibrian Tuesday afternoon at a home in La Joya, a border town near McAllen.
That's when Cibrian fired at officers, seriously wounding two of them before he barricaded himself inside the house.
He continued to fire shots at officers, pinning down the two wounded officers as they lay outside the home.
Officers were held at bay for several hours into the evening.
Guerra says Cibrian was shot after officers rammed the front door, inserted tear gas and exchanged fire.
He says the man is "presumed dead" but that won't be confirmed until a bomb squad clears the house of booby-trapped explosives Cibrian said he'd rigged.
The two officers who were wounded were eventually rescued and are being treated at a local hospital, their conditions are not known.
