Vaughan, Tierney Named to Southland All-Academic First Team

CORPUS CHRISTI - Seniors Russell Vaughan and Brandon Tierney of the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi baseball team have earned spots on the Southland Conference All-Academic First Team, the league announced today.

Both Islanders were automatic selections to the team, with Tierney gaining recognition due to his GPA and First Team All-Conference selection and Vaughan due to his Academic All-America laurels. A&M-Corpus Christi was one of just three schools in the league to have more than one player pick up first team recognition, joining McNeese State and Southeastern Louisiana.

"Brandon and Russ were two of the biggest reasons for our success this year," head coach Scott Malone said, "not just for their performance on the field, but because of their leadership. That dedication to working hard and doing things the right way carried over into the classroom, so it's no surprise that they picked up this honor. I'm proud of all their accomplishments in their time here."

Tierney was recently named First Team All-Central Region by the American Baseball Coaches Association. The Arlington, Texas, native was a First Team All-Southland selection following the regular season, the only Islander to pick up first team honors this season. He hit .341 overall on the year, the ninth-best mark in the Southland. He posted 13 doubles, two triples and three home runs, driving in 32 runs while scoring 36 times. He was hit by a pitch a team-leading 15 times.

Vaughan became the fourth Islander in any sport to be named Capital One First Team Academic All-American when he picked up the honor earlier this year. He finished his undergraduate career by earning an A in every class but one for a 3.95 cumulative GPA at the Island University. He also picked up Third Team All-Conference honors in the Southland for his performance on the field this year, hitting .318 with a .456 on-base percentage. He was one of the most improved players in the conference, raising his average 137 points at the plate.

The duo gives the Islanders six Southland All-Academic selections over the last two seasons. Last year, Stafford Brantley, Brad Porras and Jacob Dorris were first team honorees, and Jordan Lee was a second team member. Prior to the 2013 squad, A&M-Corpus Christi had just four All-Academic honorees in program history.
