CORPUS CHRISTI - One of our local historical cemeteries has been vandalized. It's the Old Bayview Cemetery, which is the oldest military cemetery in Texas.
Dozens of tombstones were pushed over and destroyed, and Karen Howden with the Nueces County Historical Commission, says this has been a problem for a few months now.
"How would you knock something like that over? I don't... I don't... This thing's huge," said Howden about one of the knocked over tombstones.
Howden couldn't give an exact number as to how many tombstones have been vandalized, but she said it's a lot.
"This grouping here, we have 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 10... We have 3 still standing," said Howden about a small area of graves.
Howden says this has been a problem at the cemetery for a while now.
"When we started coming out here about 5 years ago with our cemetery walks and such, there was vandalism... But not like this," said Howden.
She says transients will go to the cemetery at night and sometimes trash the area. But her main question she wants answered is, who would want to do this to a historical landmark?
"Why? What is the purpose of this? I don't understand what the purpose is," said Howden.
Police did take a report of the vandalism but since there are no cameras in the area they have to rely on the public to help find out who did this.
Howden says she believes this issue can have a simple fix. She's asking the city to put lights around the parameter of the cemetery so at night it won't be so dark and it will be less tempting for vandals.
Howden says the cemetery is owned by the city. Since many of the family members of the people buried there are no longer in Nueces County, it up to the city to decide who will pay for the damage.
