MCALLEN, Texas (AP) - A Mexican man who lived in the Rio Grande Valley has been sentenced to more than seven years in prison after being convicted of using Craigslist to recruit drivers to transport within the U.S. people brought into the country illegally.
Officials said Monday that a federal judge ordered 30-year-old Jose Gustavo Diaz-Velasquez to prison for smuggling and unlawful possession of a firearm. He entered a guilty plea in July 2012.
The judge Monday sentenced Diaz-Velasquez to 87 months in federal prison for both counts. The sentences will be served concurrently.
Diaz-Velasquez, who was in the U.S. illegally when he was arrested, is expected to face deportation proceedings following his release from prison.
