CORPUS CHRISTI - Kannon Burrage scored 21 points and Michael Hale III added 20 to lead UTSA to a 75-45 win over the Texas A&M - Corpus Christi basketball team on Friday night at the American Bank Center. The Roadrunners also got 18 points from Jeromie Hill to improve to 4-6 on the season.
Will Nelson led the Islanders with 13 points and Joy Williamson added 11 for the home squad. UTSA went 26-for-51 (.510) from the field and 9-for-22 (.409) from beyond the arc in posting the victory. Johnathan Jordan added six assists in a losing effort, while Hale had six assists for the winners as well.
UTSA set the tone right off the bat, as Hale drilled a three just 12 seconds into the game to spark a 7-0 run out of the gate. The Islanders struck back with consecutive jumpers, but UTSA buckled down defensively, holding the home squad without a field goal for the next 4:17, going on a 13-2 run to break the game open at 20-6.
The Islanders responded with six straight points, finishing on a Nate Maxey dunk, to cut the lead to eight, and the teams battled back-and-forth from there to 26-18. The Roadrunners had another rally in them, though, posting a 10-1 run to push the lead to 17 at 36-19. The Islanders got the last basket of the half on a jumper by Nelson to make it 36-21 at the break.
Out of the break, neither team was able to mount much of a rally, with the Roadrunners pushing the lead to 45-30. That's when UTSA went on a 21-3 run, holding the Islanders to just one field goal in the process, to push the lead to 66-33 and break the game open. From there on, the teams traded blows to the final whistle.
The Islanders return to action on Saturday, Dec. 29, with the beginning of Southland Conference play as Stephen F. Austin comes to the American Bank Center. Tipoff is slated for 3 p.m.
