CORPUS CHRISTI - The American Cancer Society held a breakfast this morning aboard the USS Lexington. The breakfast served as a kickoff for the organization's campaign to fight breast cancer and spread awareness of the local breast cancer walk that takes place October 19th.
KRIS 6 News anchor Jennifer Lira and K99 Country's CoCo headlined today's event. "The emotion impact of what we're doing never fazes," Lira said. "We're blessed to know lots of strong, inspirational women who have actually fought the disease that we are here today to fight against."
This is the fifth year The American Cancer Society is hosting the "Making Strides Against Breast Cancer" walk in Corpus Christi.
"The reason why we started this event is because breast cancer is a very prevalent cancer in Nueces County," said Kayla Hanson, the event manager, "so there is a huge need for support for those going through breast cancer."
At this morning's breakfast were representatives from each of the walk's eight flagship sponsors. Hanson says it's her hope that the sponsors and community form teams for the walk and help raise money to fight breast cancer.
The 5k Walk takes places on October 19th in downtown Corpus Christi.
A pink Chevy Camaro will be raffled off during the campaign. Details on that effort are coming soon.
