ROCKPORT - The family of Rockport native, Elton "Mark" McCabe, has received new information about his arrest in South Sudan last month. McCabe was arrested by Sudan's Security Service and charged with the kidnapping and attempted murder of a Sudanese man. His family says the charges are complete lies and now, McCabe's trial date has been set.
When we last spoke with, Cheryl Casterline her cousin Mark was still in National Intelligence and Security Services custody in South Sudan, charged with intent to kidnap and murder a Sudanese man.
After the police could find no evidence to confirm these accusations, Mark was released, only to be re-arrested by the NISS. And the concern is starting to take it's toll on Mark's wife, Anne.
"I talked to her last night about 10 o'clock and she is getting more and more distraught each day. Especially since we found out that Mark has had his trial date set," Cheryl said.
That trial date being on November 23rd, Thanksgiving Day,
Anne called Cheryl this week saying that her husband had been transferred back to a prison in the city of Juba and is living in slightly better conditions than he was while he was in NISS custody, but they worry about his overall health and whether or not he will get a fair trial.
"We have heard that the judge and prosecutor that have taken over this case are not so...up and up," she added.
And to make matters worse, during a secret call to his wife, Cheryl claims that Mark told her he need more than the original $10,000 to free himself. Though, it is still not clear, who is demanding the money.
"He has told her that now, they are demanding $100,000," Cheryl stated.
Cheryl says the State Department and local Congressman have been unable to do anything about Mark's captivity. They were able to get him an attorney, who the family hears, has already been threatened by the NISS to drop the case. But as Mark's trial date looms closer, Cheryl and her family won't be celebrating a big Thanksgiving Dinner.
"The only thing that I'm going to be giving thanks for is, well I'll be praying for his release. I'm scared to death and Anne is scared to death as it's hitting her," Casterline said.
McCabe first went to South Sudan in August with plans to start a construction business. He was arrested on October 14th.
