A barge -- carrying 80,000 gallons of crude oil -- slammed into a bridge today spilling some of the oil into the Mississippi River.
A Coast Guard spokesman says Third Coast Towing LLC owns the barge and according to a website listed under that name, the company is located here in Corpus Christi.
We called and emailed the company tonight, but haven't received a response yet.
The Coast Guard doesn't know how much oil spilled into the water but people did see oil about three miles downstream.
Vicksburg Bridge Commissioner Herman Smith said, "Well we know, that it's reported that there's a twenty four foot gash on the side of the barge and they rounded it up a little farther south."
Crews set up booms to absorb as much of the oil as they could.
Investigators -- looking into the spill -- are still trying to figure out where the oil came from in the barge.
A second barge was also damaged, but a Coast Guard spokesman doesn't believe any oil leaked from that one.
Experts say the oil shouldn't be a threat to the Gulf of Mexico.
