CORPUS CHRISTI - With 100 percent of the vote tallied, the $44 million Destination Bayfront proposition has failed with 65 percent of voters opposed. The amount of opposition remained the same from the moment early voting numbers were released by county officials at 7:01 p.m.
Mayor Nelda Martinez and other supporters of the project conceded defeat before any further results came in.
Supporters have rallied for the project since 2009. They promoted an potential increase in tourism if the project came to life.
"We knew that this would be an uphill election. And we knew it was about timing. I think it is not a reflection on wanting the park. What we heard from people was saying well maybe the time's not right," said Destination Bayfront leader Trey McCampbell.
"Of course we wanted to have Destination Bayfront be a success, but we need to respect the voter's will and we will have an opportunity to put things on pause and we'll re-assess this," said Nelda Martinez.
Both Martinez and McCampbell said it will be up to city council to decide what will happen to the land slated for the project.
Realignment of Shoreline Boulevard away from the seawall got underway today as part of a bond project approved by voters in 2008.
The biggest opposition to the bond proposal came from the group called "Neighborhoods First." Members voiced favor for the idea of Destination Bayfront. However, they opposed the timing of the issue as the city has plenty of work to do in getting streets and other infrastructure up do date or in working order.
