Trucks a Popular Target for Thieves Along the Border

BROWNSVILLE (KVEO) - Baldemar Garcia knows it can happen in a blink of an eye. He is a victim of car theft. His work truck was stolen in front of his house and the last place it was seen was crossing the border.

"They recorded the tags going over to Mexico, about an hour right after they stole it," said Garcia.

Investigator James Ramirez is part of Edinburg Police Department's Auto Theft Task Force. He said right now there are two current trends.

"They are taking the Chevy Silverado and the F-250s. They are using them for the transport of undocumented immigrants or narcotics," said Invgt. Ramirez.

Ramirez said most of the car thieves are young, normally in their early 20's or even in their teens.

"We are seeing the ones doing the actual theft are illegal. The ones that are doing it for narcotics and drugs. Nine times out of ten they are going to be illegal or undocumented immigrants," said Invgt. Ramirez.
