BRYAN - A jury in Bryan listens to opening statements and begins hearing testimony in the case of a convicted killer already serving a life term and now accused in the death of a corrections officer.

Forty-five-year-old John Ray Falk Jr. could wind up with a death sentence for an escape attempt five years ago that left 59-year-old Susan Canfield dead.

The trial starting Monday was moved to Bryan on a change of venue from Huntsville.

That's where Canfield was killed in September 2007 when Falk and fellow prisoner Jerry Martin broke away from the inmate work crew outside the Wynne Unit prison. Martin commandeered a truck and rammed it into Canfield, who was on horseback. She died of injuries.

Martin earlier was convicted in the case. He's now on death row.
