CORPUS CHRISTI - It was a unique reunion tonight at Spohn Memorial Hospital. Trauma patients got a chance to meet the people that saved their lives. A lot of the victims and survivors at tonight's event know the struggles of going through a traumatic experience and what it takes to get back to full health.
Three victims shared their stories with other trauma victims and doctors at Spohn Memorial. They talked about their up's and down's on the road to recovery and how their accidents changed the course of their lives. Kristene Chapa, one of the victims that survived a shooting in a Portland park about a year ago, also attended the reunion. She said it was great to know someone else understands what she's going through even though they have all experienced different traumas. She also said she owes a lot of her recovery to the doctors who stood by her side through it all.
"Without them I wouldn't have gone so far," she said. "they saved my life. Here at Memorial, all the support thy gave me and always being nice and kind to me."
She also said hearing what other survivors had to say was inspiring. "The stories that I heard today," Chapa said, "I could relate to them like not wanting to eat in the very beginning when we first had injuries and fighting with our families."
Chapa got a chance to thank those doctors a year after her tragic experience along with all other trauma victims. The doctor who spearheaded this event said it's been something they've wanted to do for a long time now to give the patients the chance to thank the doctors and it appeared to be an equally rewarding experience for the doctors as well.
