CORPUS CHRISTI -- A couple dozen people showed up today to help bless a sacred Native American burial site and clean it up.
Before the group could step onto the sacred ground, at the end of Wooldridge, where it dead ends into Oso Bay, Larry "Running Turtle" led a special prayer and tobacco blessing.
He said, "Something that we do anytime we go into sacred grounds to give thanks and ask permission in a good way."
Then, the clean up began.
Everyone grabbed plastic bags and began picking up trashing scattered throughout the area.
They also planted trees to please Mother Earth.
Volunteer Christopher Pyrek said, "We're going to plant it here and I'll come out here in a couple months and see how she's doing."
Blaze Pyrek, another volunteer, said, "Picking up the trash and bringing back sacredness to the area for people buried here and bringing them honor and respect."
Larry "Running Turtle" says it was a disgrace to see some of the things volunteers found on the land where his ancestors are buried.
He said, "That hurts. That hurts dearly to see car parts and people who dispose tires and whatever they can because of pure laziness."
But after spending the morning cleaning up the grounds the area looked beautiful once again.
Larry "running Turtle" said, "We hope that they don't forget that these are all sacred lands and they need to be treated that way and they need to be respected."
The city picked up the trash bags from the site this afternoon.
