CORPUS CHRISTI -- Today the Corpus Christi Police Department put on a training class for volunteers to learn how to write disabled parking citations.

Folks with the Citizens Police Academy say the volunteers go through training for a few weeks and practice handing out tickets.

The volunteers help fill in if police officers are to busy to check on handicap spots.

The fine for parking in a handicap spot used to be $200 but now it's $500.

Cheryl Daubs, President of Corpus Christi Citizens Police Academy Alumni, said, "Most people who need a disabled parking spot would give anything to be able to park down the road and get out and walk like the rest of us can. They don't park there because they want to park up close, they park there because they need to."
