Track and Field Heads to Norman for SLC Indoor Championships

NORMAN, Okla. - The Texas A&M - Corpus Christi men's and women's track and field teams will travel to Norman, Okla. for the Southland Conference Indoor Championships at Mosier Indoor Track. The meet will begin on Friday, Feb. 22 and continue through Saturday, Feb. 23.

"We are sanguine about our chances heading into the championships with three of our all-conference cross country runners out with injuries," Head Coach Shawn Flanagan said. "We have had several underclassmen step up though and we are looking for good things to happen."

Leading the way for the men's team is Roger De La Cruz who holds the top mark in the conference in the men's high jump. The senior cleared a school record height of 2.14m (7-00.25) at the Red Raider Open. Quincy Obeng will join him in the event while the Islanders have seven set to compete in the men's 3k. Philipp Baar has the top time for the Islanders after clocking a time of 8:34.99 at the Cowboy Indoor Invite. Daniel Barlow is also slated to compete. The senior set a season-best time of 4:21.11 at the Texas Tech Indoor Open. Also competing for the Islanders in the 3k are Paul Hansel, Jacob Abrego, Christoph Hintz, Angel Banda and Justin Adame. Hansel and Barlow will also compete in the men's one mile while Abrego Baar, Hintz and Adame will participate in the men's 5k along with Banda.

Eric July is looking to pace the men's team in the 60m after a clocking a school-best time in the 55m at the Red Raider Open earlier this month. He will then join David Carrillo in the men's 200m. Carrillo set a personal-best time of 22.43 in the event at the Texas Tech Indoor Open, which ranks second all-time in school history.

Carrillo is also scheduled to join William Scott and Cordarius Edmondson in the 400m. Carrillo broke the school record at the Texas Tech Indoor Open with a time of 40.86 in January. Edmondson also set a season-best time with a mark of of 49.99 at the Red Raider Open.

Valentinas Rudys will look to improve his seventh-place finish in the 800m where he finished last season in the meet. Joining him will be Bryce Johnston and Brandon Lacy. Lacy clocked a personal-best time of 1:55.88 at the Red Raider Open earlier this month.

Rounding out the individual events is Michael Diamond in the men's long jump and triple jump.

Scott, Carrillo, Edmondson and Lacy are set to team up in the men's 4x400 meter relay while Hansel, Edmondson, Lacy and Barlow will lead the team in the distance medley relay.

On the women's side, Ashley Rosebrough returns to the championships after placing fifth last season in the women's 200m. Rosebrough is set to return in the event along with the 60m.

Sidney Siepert will pace the Islanders in the women's 400m. The junior is second all-time in Islanders history with time of 59.71. Jasmine Boutte and freshmen Shanice Prendergast and Ashley Mills will join Siepert in the event. Prendergast set a personal-best time of 1.00.48 this season at the Red Raider Open.

Freshmen Kim Ward and Regina Salinas will make their conference debut in the women's one mile and 3k. Joining the two in the 3k are freshmen Samantha Hardin, Alexandra Fernandez and sophomore Vanessa Galindo. Hardin and Galindo will also compete in the women's 5k. Last season, Galindo placed 10th at the championships with a personal-best time of 18:04.74.

Siepert, Prendergast, Allison Baker and Kayla Fischer will lead the women's team in the 4x400 meter relay while Boutte, Siepert, Fernandez and Salinas are slated for the distance medley relay.

In the field events, Baker will compete in the high jump while Jontavia Dailey is scheduled for the long jump and triple jump. Isabella Baptiste will be the first Islander to compete in the pentathlon since Jennifer Pacheco competed in the event at the Southland Conference Indoor Championships in 2008. Baptiste will compete in the 60m hurdles, high jump, long jump and shot put.

Following the two-day championships, the men's and women's teams will open the outdoor season at the UIW Invitational in San Antonio on March 1-2.
