CORPUS CHRISTI - Child Protective Services caseworkers called the Corpus Christi Police Department this morning when they found two young girls left alone at the Treyway Apartments on Holly.

As officers were working on getting a key to the apartment from management, the pregnant mother of the toddlers came home with a man. That man took off before police could question him. Maria Carrejo, 21, was arrested on charges of child endangerment.

We're told Carrejo did not tell officers why she left the girls alone or where she went.

The girls who were left alone are younger than 4 years old. Police say Carrejo also has a 6-year-old child who was at school.

Carrejo had nothing to say to us as she was being taken into custody.

The children will be turned over to their grandmother or may end up in the state's foster care system.

Some neighbors tell us they've seen the mother walking around the complex before - without her children.

One woman says she's even seen the little girls walking around on the roof once as they were looking for their mother.
