THREE RIVERS - One man is dead and a police officer is recovering after a routine traffic stop turned violent in Three Rivers last night. According to police, an officer pulled over a Ford Mustang for not using a turn signal. At the time the officer thought the driver and passenger might be illegal immigrants.
Police say 25-year-old Margarito Martinez-Gallejos was pulled over near his home in Three Rivers. He got out of his vehicle and was talking to an officer, while another officer approached the car to talk to the passenger.
Martinez-Gallejos allegedly took off running towards his home at 1509 Hackberry. Police say Officer Monsies Robles chased the suspect while Officer Noah Leuschner stayed with the passenger.
Police say the suspect ran into the home and closed the door behind him. The officer went into the house where he found Martinez-Gallejos in the kitchen.
Soon, Robles got into a struggle with the suspect and Leuschner used a taser on him. Martinez-Gallejos was somehow able to get the taser away from Leuschner and used it on the other officer.
Police say Leuschner then drew his pistol and shot the suspect. Martinez-Gallejos was pronounced dead at the scene.
Officer Robles was taken to the hospital to be checked out for injuries to his leg.
Chief Vance Roberts says the Officer Leuschner is on administrative leave while the incident is under investigation by Texas Rangers. The Chief also says the officer has only been on the force for a year.
Autopsy and toxicology results for Martinez-Gallejos could be available as early as today. The chief did not want to speculate on why the suspect ran in the first place.
