CORPUS CHRISTI - We're all familiar with "Don't Mess With Texas." Now the City of Corpus Christi has taken the anti-litter campaign one step further. But there's something about this anti-litter campaign you may not know.
Instead of creating the campaign in house like they usually do, the city is spending about $50,000 of taxpayer money to have an outside agency do the work. A Corpus Christi company called Bucket Works has added an anti-litter campaign to its bucket list. This is the first time the city has used an outside agency for an educational campaign.
"We needed a specific talent that we do not have in the city. So that's why we went with the outside agency," said Solid Waste Director Lawrence Mikolajaczyk.
The city's footing the bill for the campaign with money from your Utility bill. Every month 25 cents from your Solid Waste charge is put into a fund that can only be used for educational purposes, like the beach clean-ups or promotional materials.
Five ad agencies competed for this campaign. So why did Bucket Works stand out?
"The approach they had with the program that they wanted to roll out, and also it looked to be the best value," said Mikolajaczyk.
It remains to be seen whether this campaign results in a cleaner city.
"Next year we will present all of our findings to council and then we'll determine at that time how much of the campaign we need to continue with," said Mikolajaczyk.
You'll be seeing the new anti-litter campaign on billboards and TV in the coming months. Then come September, a second phase of the campaign begins with the slogan, "Leave It Better Than You Found It."
