CORPUS CHRISTI - Calallen senior swimmer Wes McCoy is one of the top freestyle swimmers in the state, and is ranked in the top 25 in the Nation.
He recently was invited to compete in the Speedo Short Course Junior National Swimming Championships, where he placed 25th in the 50 fresstyle.
His coach Adam Scott credits McCoy's success to his hard work and determination.
"I get here for practice at 5:30am, go back home eat, go to school, then come home do some homework back here for practice, then go home and do more homework and then try to get to bed by 10pm so I can wake up and do it the next day," said McCoy.
Renovations to the Natatorium this past fall caused several headaches for his training, forcing him to use outside pools thus dealing with the elements.
"It's been tough having to go to Greenwood before it got really cold was a challenge not enough lane space, it wasn't the training we wished we could have had," said McCoy.
"The great thing about him was he never used it as an excuse we had to swim outdoors and missed a ton of time in the water but he used it as motivation," said Scott.
On average he swims 65,000 yards per week.
His ultimate goal is to swim in college.
