PORT ARANSAS - A video we shared this week of a monkey attacking a police officer has gone viral, making headlines across the world.
Aransas Pass Police Officer Keith Moore was writing out a speeding ticket on Wednesday when a monkey jumped from the back seat and went after the cop's hand.
The rookie officer wasn't seriously hurt but it's definitely something he'll never forget. Today we tracked down the monkey and its owner. We knew interviewing the owner, Richard T. Spohrer, known as "T" The Monkey Man.
The 13-year-old Capuchin monkey named April is actually pretty friendly. She and her owner have a business partnership with a man named "Birdman Bob" and his two Macaws in Port Aransas.
"Give him kisses," Monkey Man said as he placed April on some kids' laps. April and the two birds pose for pictures with people for money.
"Monkey!" Kids shouted as Birdman Bob took their picture. April, who picks through her owner's beard and sometimes peers inside his mouth, is curious. Seen giving high fives to people on the street shows she's smart. Her dad, however, says she's also extremely protective of him.
The Monkey Man recalled what happened during the traffic stop. "His hands came inside the truck," he said referring to Officer Moore, "and that's when she said, 'No, that's not going to happen.' I kept going, 'Oh Honey, not a police officer please please!'"
April seems to like reporters but after three separate incidents in which she went "bananas" on photographer Dennis Kingsbury, we can't say the same about photographers.
The Monkey Man says he and April have been partners for seven years now and she wouldn't hurt a fly. In fact, she doesn't even have teeth.
"She knows she doesn't have any teeth but she also knows that if she takes your hand and sticks it in her mouth real quick, it makes your heart go, 'ba boom ba boom,'" The Monkey Man explained.
April definitely gave Officer Moore a scare when she went "ape" that morning but don't let the front fool you; she's just there for the show.
