HOUSTON (AP) - A school district spokesman says a high school student who shot himself while handcuffed in the back of a patrol car after being taking into custody at his Houston-area campus had told a friend he might hurt himself.
Police say they're investigating how the gun the student shot himself with wasn't found before he was put in the vehicle Wednesday.
Galena Park school district spokesman Jonathan Frey says deputies picked up the 17-year-old Wednesday morning after he'd texted a friend that he wanted to hurt himself.
The student was detained, handcuffed and placed in the back of the car. But Frey says the student retrieved a "hidden gun" and shot himself.
The unidentified student was conscious when taken to a hospital and was in critical but stable condition Wednesday evening.
