Texas House to Vote on Abortion Restrictions

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) - The Texas House is debating a bill that will impose tough new restrictions on abortions, as activists announce plans to take their opposition campaign across Texas.

Lawmakers began debating the bill Tuesday morning and are expected to vote in the afternoon. Democrats and women's rights supporters have protested the bill for weeks. Republican leaders are intent on passing it quickly.

Supporters say the bill will offer women more protection when they seek abortions. Critics say conservatives are trying to make the procedure harder to get.

The bill would require doctors to have admitting privileges at nearby hospitals, only allow abortions in surgical centers, dictate when abortion pills are taken and ban abortions after 20 weeks.

Planned Parenthood announced it was launching a Stand With Texas Women bus tour.
