HOUSTON (AP) - A Houston-area man who worked as a post-traumatic stress counselor for veterans has been sentenced to 30 days in prison for lying about his war medals.

A federal judge in Houston on Monday sentenced 41-year-old Paul A. Schroeder of Shenandoah for altering a military or naval discharge certificate.

Schroeder in February resigned from the PTSD Foundation of America amid questions about his war record.

Schroeder presented himself as a former Special Forces sergeant with two Purple Hearts, three Bronze Stars and two Meritorious Service Medals. He claimed to have served in Iraq, Afghanistan, Africa and Central and South America.

Military personnel records at Fort Knox, Ky., do not indicate that Schroeder deployed overseas or earned the honors. He was a military police officer at Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio.
